EXCELLENCE

A commitment to excellence is a must.

Leaders should establish excellence as the standard for performance. It requires hard work. This has been the case for me during leadership assignments. During command, on any particular day some mistakes were made. Nevertheless, our team knew that excellence was the overall standard. They knew there was no room for mediocrity. We assessed and learned from the mistakes. We continually improved, with the day-to-day performance bar set high.

Over time it became a habit. This was not forced or dictated. The chief petty officers, officers, and crew were committed to excellence and continual improvement. It was a joy to watch.

We believe that excellence is continually doing the right things right. For me and my commands, this has been applied as follows:Continually: A consistent level of effort was involved, which created habits. The effort was not for just one at-sea period, one deployment, or one annual performance-evaluation period by individuals. Continual implied sustained and for the long haul. And implied in the level of effort was commitment.
